From Tuesday 10th September to Saturday 16th November, The Yard Theatre will play host to an array of new works selected especially for their class of ’13 Festival.
Over ten weeks, a selection of 2013’s best emerging companies, hand-picked by Artistic Director Jay Miller, will present their work in and around The Yard’s warehouse home.
On the pavements of Hackney Wick and on The Yard’s stage, audiences are invited to experience the great theatre-makers of tomorrow, doing great things today.
“Since its conception in 2011, The Yard has existed to nurture new ideas, provide a home for new writing and explore the live event. We want to bring to our stage work that is original, daring and unlike anything you’d see elsewhere. Class of ‘13 celebrates this ethos, bringing to the fore the artists who we feel are doing all these things, and who truly represent the future of British theatre.”
Amongst the line up is poet and playwright Siddhartha Bose with ‘London’s Perverted Children’. Part-play, part-gig, part-walking tour and unlike anything you’ve experienced before.
Next up is Write by Numbers with their award winning play, ‘Beneath the Albion Sky’, an imaginative piece looking back at English History.
‘PuffBall’, created by The Yard’s Artistic Associate, Caroline Williams is a show which examines the struggle to rescue ourselves when our self gets horribly lost.
A hit earlier on this year at The Yard’s Generation Game Collection, Jake Costello returns with his darkly comedic solo show, ‘Spank House’ , using actual con-scripts to tell the true story of Jake’s colourful, criminal past.
Following from that is Nigel Barrett and Louise Mari’s ‘A Conversation’, a piece looking at the correlation between happiness and good conversation.
Another hit from the Generation Game collection was the wonderfully wacky ‘BRUCE’ by Sarah Johns Music Party. In an image-obsessed world where science trumps faith, ‘BRUCE’ is a performance that asks us to stop being seduced by what we see and to travel into an internal world of the senses.
Renowned theatre maker Alexander Zeldin has worked with the likes of Mariinsky Opera and Peter Brook, and will present a new piece currently in development at The Yard Theatre.
Finding Frank, is a piece created by The Unhidden Collective that is based on the testimonies of people living with mental health issues. The piece looks to explore the relationship between memory and music.
The final week of the show will see the return of Yard Artistic Associate Alex Rennie, with his show ‘This is Your Life’, a devised, inter-disciplinary piece using music, movement, text and technology to reflect upon a world in which sensory systems are under constant assault.
